Fitness for Service Assessment / Life Extension

Life Extension & Fitness for Service

The application of Risk Based Inspection (RBI) varies depending on the objective. When employed to assess operating design life, RBI can facilitate life extension studies for an entire facility or an individual vessel.

Life extension involves an exhaustive review of a facility or vessel to ascertain whether enhancements are necessary and what is required to prolong its operational life. At the facility level, this process includes evaluating multiple dimensions, such as structural integrity, electrical systems, materials and rotating equipment, among others. Specific criteria may be established based on varying or similar reservoir fluids and operational needs, as required. Risk assessments are integrated with cost estimates to support decision-making regarding whether to proceed with a complete life extension or only a portion of it.

The fitness-for-service assessment is designed to evaluate whether a facility or vessel can continue to operate safely in its current condition. Changes in processes can induce unexpected corrosion or exceed operating limits. In such cases, it's crucial to assess whether vessels are still fit for service by examining the materials of construction, operational history, and current conditions or fluids and by evaluating risk, consequence and probability.

AICM Engineering Services is equipped to determine the ongoing safety and usability of your vessels.
